Snowy conditions close freeway at Applegate

Snowy conditions and a roadway accident forced traffic to turn around at the Applegate exit on Interstate 80 Wednesday afternoon.

According to California Highway Patrol’s online Web site, traffic was being turned at Applegate due to an accident on the freeway. As of about 1 p.m., there was no estimated reopening time.

Officer David Martinez, spokesman for the CHP’s Auburn office, said there was no record of an accident within Auburn’s jurisdiction.

However, he said semi-trucks are being turned around due to snow on the roadway.

According to CHP’s site, there is a jack-knifed big rig stuck on the freeway between Emigrant Gap and Yuba Gap.

The California Department of Transportation reported Wednesday that Interstate 80 was closed to eastbound traffic at Applegate due to multiple vehicle spinouts.

Chains are required on all vehicles, expect those with four-wheel drive or snow tires, from Colfax to Truckee.
