Colfax JV girls tame Placer, Bear River

Weimar Hills seventh-grade guard Jake Breeler gets off a pass during last Saturday’s championship game of the Warrior Classic seventh-grade basketball tournament which drew 11 teams from the area. Weimar Hills posted a perfect 3-0 record and defeated Oak Hill of Clear Lake, 37-19, in the championship game. Magnolia took third place in the tournament while E.V. Cain won the consolation award. Earning all-tournament honors for Weimar Hills were Pat Beninga, Ray Henry and Mason Lewis.

It was rivalry week for the Colfax High JV girls basketball team last week and the Lady Falcons responded with a pair of impressive Pioneer Valley League wins over Placer and Bear River.
Last Wednesday at Auburn, the Lady Falcons built a 22-16 halftime advantage over host Placer and then pulled away to a 40-31 win over the Hillmen.
Sara Davidson’s eight points and seven apiece from Haleigh Lis, Ashley Scott and Mariah Turcotte led a balanced Colfax showing in the victory.
Friday evening saw the Lady Falcons and Bear River hook up in an exciting game at Lake of the Pines. Colfax held a 20-17 margin at halftime but Bear River forged into a late lead before Scott sank a clutch bucket with six seconds to play to tie the contest at 40-40 and force overtime.
In the extra session, Colfax received another big hoop from Scott and outscored the Bruins for a 45-41 victory.
Scott’s 15 points, nine each from Lis and Davidson and seven from Cassy Harrison led the Lady Falcons. In the rebounding department, Colfax coach Clark Mosier was pleased with the showings of Lis who snared 11 boards and Davidson who added 10. In addition, Turcotte came up with five assists and four steals.
JV boys stop slide with win
Colfax’s JV boys basketball team stopped a five-game loss skid by notching a 43-31 win Tuesday night at Whitney. Colfax held a 21-9 lead at halftime and never allowed the Wildcats to get back into the game.
Luke Beninga’s 17 points and 10 from Devon Loomis sparked the Falcons who are now 3-6 in PVL games. Colfax plays tonight at El Dorado and then hosts league leading Mesa Verde next Tuesday.
Colfax skis well
In the final CNISF giant slalom race of the season Monday at Sugar Bowl, several Colfax High skiers fared well in competition.
Colfax’s Nicole Bajka placed fifth followed by Allison Gutierrez who was seventh overall. Colfax’s Bailey Simmons was 25th.
In the boys race, defending state champion Max Schopfer of the Falcons won in a time of 2:05.15. Teammate Dylan Laidlaw raced to fourth place (2:09.77). Tommy Irons finished 28th for Colfax.
Corralejo, Mathe notch wins
A shorthanded Colfax High wrestling team was no match for defending Pioneer Valley League champion Placer last week as the host Hillmen drilled the Falcons, 70-6.
Colfax did earn two wins by major decision in the match as Vinny Corralejo won at 154 pounds and Kenny Mathe won at 217.
Corralejo and Josh Partin also posted wins Tuesday night in PVL action against Lincoln.The Falcons will be in action at the PVL Championship Tournament Feb. 11 at Whitney.
