Colfax High boys first, girls fifth in power rankings

The CIF Sac-Joaquin Section released its first basketball power ratings of the season for both boys and girls and a pair of Colfax High squads shaped up pretty well in the initial rankings.

The ratings, which are based on a formula of wins, losses, league strengths and non-league performance, are used by the section to eventually seed the CIF championship playoff tournaments for Division I thru V.

Colfax’s boys held down the No. 1 spot in the boys Div. IV ratings. The Falcons, 18-4 overall and 6-1 in Pioneer Valley League games as of Monday, led a group which included No. 2 Calaveras (16-4), No. 3 Christian Brothers (10-9) and No. 4 Modesto Christian (8-7).

Rounding out the top eight were No. 5 Central Catholic, No. 6 Mariposa, No. 7 Cosumnes Oaks and No. 8 Hilmar.

The next eight includes Hilmar at No. 9, No. 10 Linden, Escalon at No. 11, Highlands at No. 12, No. 13 Millennium, No. 14 San Juan, No. 15 Vacaville Christian and No. 16 Denair.

In the girls Div. IV ratings, Argonaut, Modesto Christian, Bear River and West Campus held the top four spots followed by Colfax at No. 5, Capital Christian at No. 6, Linden at No. 7 and Vacaville Christian at No. 8.

The girls next eight teams were Ripon at No. 9, Christian Brothers at No. 10, No. 11 was LeGrand, No. 12 at Calaveras, No. 13 Waterford, No. 14 Hilmar, No. 15 Orestimba and No. a6 Bret Harte.
