65-0. 64-7. 62-12. 59-6.

Those were just a small sampling of the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section first round football playoff scores that started to come across the television sports ticker last Friday that drew gasps and shock from Mariposa in the south to Yuba City in the north.

But what did you expect?

When the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section expanded its playoff brackets this season from 58 to 76 teams it meant that more teams reached the post season. It also meant there was more margin of error for first round drubbings that proved to be more than the norm.

In 15 of the 36 first round games played in all divisions, the winning team scored 40 or more points. Six more contests had the victor tallying 30 or more. All total, 21 of the 36 first round games were decided by three or more touchdowns.

At Modesto Christian, the Crusaders put a running clock on Colfax in the third quarter. It’s the first time ever that the Falcons had succumbed to the CIF rule to end runaway games. The final: 64-7.

At Lincoln, the Zebras built a 43-0 halftime lead over out-manned Livingston. It could have been expected. The Wolves had surrendered 62 and 52 points respectively in their last two losses.

At Placer, pre-game hype had Foothill sounding like the second coming of De La Salle. No so. The Hillmen scored so quick and combined with a 7 p.m. start and bad weather, late arriving fans saw the score and turned around and went home.

A game between a No. 8 and 9 seed is usually a toss up. That never happened in Loomis as the Golden Eagles ended Christian Brothers’ season, 42-13.

Pioneer’s late-game triple lateral two weeks ago that pulled out a last second win over Woodland got the Patriots and Yuba City into the playoffs and prevented Bear River from making it. Finals: Del Campo 36 Pioneer 0, Vanden 48 Yuba City 14.

Speaking of Bear River, you can probably hear co-coaches Scott Savoie and Terry Logue’s teeth grinding this week when Calaveras, a team the Bruins shut out in Week Two, plays at Placer Friday in a Div. IV quarter-final round game.

Site Change

Because its playing field is starting to show the wear and tear of a long season and the elements, Rocklin will host its second round Div. II playoff game against Atwater Friday at Whitney High. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

The CIF has already announced that if Rocklin and Grant meet in a semi-final game on Dec. 4, the contest will be moved to a neutral site with an artificial playing surface. If Folsom High is not hosting a playoff game that night, look for the contest to be played there.

Hoop Time

CIF Sac-Joaquin Foundation Game doubleheaders will kick off the basketball season Monday. Most are doubleheaders with girls playing at 6 p.m. followed by boys tilts at 7:30. These are varsity only games. The gate receipts from these games go to support CIF scholarships.

Area teams in action include Del Oro at Colfax, Foresthill at Golden Sierra, Placer at Roseville, Bear River at Forest Lake, Union Mine at Lincoln and Vista del Lago at Whitney.

Speaking of Del Oro, the latest is mum is the word from everyone involved on the eligibility of a 6-7 Div. I caliber boys player from France that transferred into the Loomis area this year. Stay tuned.

The Sac-San Joaquin CIF is not alone. Take a look at Maxpreps and you'll see that there were a number of bloodlettings in CIF first-round playoff games in the state. I know the CIFs like money and supposedly they want to maximize the number of schools having a playoff experience but , really, how much fun is it getting beaten by 5-6 TDs (or more)? What does reaching the playoffs mean when schools with not just losing records but even 2-8 and 3-7 records make it?

Speaking of Del Oro vs. Chistian Bros., I fully expected a rout by Del Oro. They are much stronger than CB up front and that is where most football games are won. Del Oro was seeded too low - they were an inadvertent whistle away from defeating unbeaten, 2nd seeded Rocklin.

Don't be surprised if the Grant-Rocklin game is on grass. If Folsom wins then they play at home and the next two venues under consideration are American River College and Sac State.

7:00 pm start, bad weather , and the score......made Placer fans turn and go home?? Which game were you watching? All CIF playoff games were slated fro a 7 pm start....Bad weather?? You mean clear skies and cool temps? Half the fans were still in Halloween disguise as empty seats.

Please, do not offer up any excuses for the lack of attendance at the first Placer home playoff game in 29 years. The fans, students, and community that did not show up was an embarrassment to the young men and coaches of the football team. They deserve our local support, and the crowd on Friday should have been so overflowing that folks should have been turned away due to a fire code violation of too many people.

Show up and support your team Auburn & Placer High!! No excuses.

Bear River got exactly what they deserved this year. A losing record in PVL, a drubbing loss to Placer and a seat at home during the playoffs. This is they're KARMA for what they did to the Hillmen last year by being the whistle blowing RATS that they we're to the CIF about Dalton. Give those Bruin coaches NO sympathy ... as they could care less about anyone but themselves. They are NOT nice people. The talk a lot of bad stuff about everyone. Those coaches are the most selfish, egotistacal and biggest liers in the foothills. I'm glad a fluke play kept their 5-5 team at home.... they deserved it. All their wins we're against teams like Lindhurst, Meas Verde and El Dorado.... they didn't have a win against ANY good opponents.

To look a little closer at the Bear River's football team this season... if we're arguing that they should be in the playoffs at all. They went 5-5 and among their impressive wins besides their route of Lindhurst was a win over Woodcreek (4-6 overall) in week three mind you before the Wolves got it going and beat Granite Bay and Del Oro to get a lucky playoff spot, which then they got trampled by Folsom. The Bruins other great win was a huge 9-0 defeat over an unimpressive Calavares squad (which is a school largely know for other sports besides Football) Calaveras's upset over the Dixon Rams was basically Dixon looking past them at a Placer rematch of last years 'fog game' that they lost. Dixon had that game in command and didn't finish the job.

The Bruin football team then went out in week four and lost four out of six league games.... and why should they be in the Playoffs...... (i hear crickets....) exactly. Besides... I'll bet the Bruin players are happy to have their awesome season over so they can go back to partying and giving exscuses like always in LOP. Those kids, parents and coaches are all just Granite Bay/N.U. wannabes anyhow! They're 'false sense of entitlement' won't get their 5-5 team a playoff spot.

Placer will dominate Calaveras and get their rematch with Lincoln ... and they will be ready. GO HILLMEN!!

Placer will get their rematch but they will be going down AGAIN!!! CAN'T wait to see the faces on those Hillbillies when they lose another game ;)

bet you really brought the leather in your day.but, what's up w/ all the spite?tell ya what,i'll be the one w/ the sad surfer face if lincoln defeats placer.after we focus on calaveras, then we'll focus on lincoln;and cherish the opportunity to prove ourselves.go hillmen.
