Colfax runners head to state meet

Colfax High's girls cross country team chalked up a second place team finish in Div. IV at last Saturday's CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Championships held at Wilow Hills near Folsom. The effort earned the Colfax girls a bid to the CIF State Meet set for Nov. 28 in Fresno. Shown from left are Madeline Richards, Haley Walker, Kirsten Read, Sara Howard, Madeline Newman, Christina Keyes and Michelle Read.

For the sixth straight year, Colfax High will be represented at the CIF State Cross Country Meet in Fresno.

Thanks to a pair of superlative efforts from the school’s girls team and from senior boys runner Nick Read, the Falcons’ banner will be flying again at Woodward Park on Nov. 28.

Running in last weekend’s CIF Sac-Joaquin Section championship meet at Willow Hills near Folsom, the Colfax girls team came out of nowhere from the previous week’s sub-section meet to place second overall as a team.

Read punched his ticket with a fine fourth place overall showing in the boys varsity run.

The Colfax girls team, coached by Jim Howard and Tom Read, probably provided the surprise of the day. After placing just seventh as a team at the sub-section meet , the Lady Falcons were at full strength for the section meet and went out and ran a superb race.

Bret Harte, the sub-section winner, repeated as section champ with 52 points but were followed in by Colfax (86), Bear River (97), Riverbank (110), Golden Sierra (116) and Christian Brothers (129).

Senior Sara Howard provided the Lady Falcons with their impetus as she finished 6th overall in a time of 21:01. She was followed in by junior Haley Walker who was right behind in 7th place in a time of 21:27.

Also scoring critical points for Colfax were Kirsten Read, a senior who was 15th in 22:12; freshman Madeline Newman who took 29th in 22:57 and sophomore Michelle Read who placed 32nd in 23:22.

Also finishing for the Lady Falcons were Christina Keyes, a sophomore who was 36th in 23:52 and Madeline Richards, another sophomore, who placed 46th in 24:53.

For the varsity boys, Nick Read’s 17:22 time over the three mile course was good enough to take fourth place and qualify him for his third straight CIF state meet.

Alex Morgan was 62nd for Colfax’s varsity boys in 21:40.

Colfax’s frosh boys team also fared well as the Falcons took fourth place as a team behind Hughson, Liberty Ranch of Galt and Highlands.

Leading Colfax’s showing were Patrick Myers (3rd), Max Tucker (14th), Harrison Graves (18th), Jesse Dail (19th), Jacob Edwards (20th), Curtis Hilgenberg(22nd) and Logan Hallman (23rd).
