The Colfax City Council entered into an agreement with attorney Mick Cabral on Tuesday to provide legal services to the city.

Cabral replaces former city attorney Scott Browne, whose contract was terminated in a closed session of the Aug. 11 council meeting.

Under those terms, Browne is being retained for 30 days. Interim City Manager Bruce Kranz said the decision is based on a strategy to use legal services more efficiently.

“Typically, the former city attorney did everything,” Kranz said. “Now we’re considering having various attorneys based on expertise — for example, someone for land use decisions, or for our cease and desist order.

Kranz said doing so would cut back on billable research time as well as provide new insight into city issues.

“A land use attorney could help us develop strategies to bring in additional revenue,” he said. “If we develop our general plan right, we can attract revenue-producing commercial and retail.

While Browne attended nearly every meeting, Cabral may attend far less frequently, relying instead on electronic communication with the city.
