Granite Bay sophomore James Kinloch is the first Placer County athlete through to the state meet after a second place finish in the discus Thursday at Hughes Stadium

Preliminary rounds have begun on the track, and finals in some field events will be completed today as well at the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters track and field finals at Hughes Stadium.

A full story on the event will follow, but in the interim, I will use this blog to pass along results as they happen.

9:30 p.m. Thursday 5/28

Granite Bay's Justin Sutter leaped 23 feet, 6 inches to win the long jump competition. The senior, who owns the longest jump in the state this season at 24 feet, 4 inches, will now move on to go for a state title next week.

The Grizzlies' Amy Fuelner missed a top three finish in the girls shot put by 1/2-inch, finishing fourth. She has one more shot at state Friday in the discus.

Robbie Simmons of Rocklin won the section pole vault title with a top mark of 16 feet, 4 inches. His twin brother, Cale, will join him at state after a second place 15 foot, 10 inch vault. Jordon Alviso of Granite Bay finished fourth, but his 15 foot, 4 inch top height clears the 14 foot, 10 inch at-large height hurdle, so the Granite Bay senior will also participate next week.

Placer's Derrick Hinch slipped to sixth and did not make the at-large minimum height.

The Hillmen 4x400 relay team was eighth in qualifying, and will be joined in Friday's final by Del Oro, off of its ninth place finish in the prelims.

In the girls 4x400, the stage is set for an exciting runoff with three teams finishing under four minutes in Thursday's qualifying. Woodcreek's preliminary time is .01 better than second place Oakmont's number, putting the two Roseville city rivals next to each other in the center of the track on Friday night.

With a seventh-place finish in qualifying, Del Oro will also run in the Friday night relay final.

AFter missing out earlier in the day in the 100-meter, Roseville's Jordan Magnusson did reach the Friday final with a sixth place run in the 200.

With her sixth place result in the girls 200-meter prelim and her teams No. 2 run in the relay, Oakmont's Jazmin Harper earned a spot in the Friday night finals of four sprint events.

Josh Carter of Rocklin missed out in both hurdle events, with a 10th place run in the 300-meter hurdles being his best result. After missing out in the 100-meter hurdles, Colfax' Andrea Severson did qualify in the 300-meter with a ninth-place finish.

6:15 p.m. Thursday 5/28

Placer High junior Lucas Stancliff grabbed the ninth and final spot in Friday's boys 800-meter run final in the just completed preliminary of that event.

5:50 p.m. Thursday 5/28

The field was tightly bunched in the preliminary rounds of the boys 100-meter dash, and Roseville's Jordan Magnusson was left on the outside. The junior finished 13th in the prelims, just .08 seconds out of the 10.99-second magic number that tied for eighth and ninth, the finals spots coming back for Friday's finals.

Del Oro's Kelsey Seaman had the eighth-best time in qualifying for the girls 800-meter run, and she will be back on Friday night for the final.

5:20 p.m. Thursday 5/28

Sophomore James Kinloch of Granite Bay finished second in the boys discus with a toss of 161 feet, 7 inches. That results makes Kinloch the first Placer County athlete to qualify for a trip to the state meet in Clovis.

Roseville sophomore Chelsee Elliott finished sixth in the girls long jump, leaving her one more chance in Friday's triple jump to reach the top three and a state meet berth.

So far, it has been a pretty good day for Oakmont on the track, with some other positive results mixed in.

In the preliminary runs of the first event of the day, the girls 4x100 relay, Oakmont delivered the fifth best time, leaving the Vikings in the middle of the pack of nine who will run in Friday's final.

The top three in each event after the finals qualify for the state meet next week.

Del Oro, with a No. 8 finish in the relay prelims, will also run tomorrow night, while Woodcreek, Colfax and Placer all finished outside the top nine.

No local teams have reached the finals of the boys 4x100, as both Rocklin and Whitney finished out of the money.

Placer's Dylan Swisley is the No. 5 qualifier for Friday's final in the girls 100-meter hurdles, while Andrea Severson of Colfax, Jordan Hardy and Kayla Kamaka of Woodcreek and Jessica Mixon of Del Oro all missed out on moving to Friday's final.

In the boys 110-meter hurdles, no locals advanced as both Josh Carter and Justin Ellerbee finished out of the top nine in the preliminary heats.

Jazmin Harper of Oakmont, who is part of the Vikings 4x100 unit, will run at least twice Friday night as she had the fastest qualifying run in today's 400-meter dash prelim. The sophomore has two more events to go, the 200 and the 4x400 relay.

Del Oro's Samantha Eggert was eighth, and will return Friday night to chase Harper.

Jacque Harvel of Woodcreek also ran in the 400-meter Thursday, but finished just outside the qualifiers, in 11th position. Cauleen Doughty of Placer and Kyrah Vaughn of Whitney also fell below the top nine.

Local runners - Kenny Andri of Del Oro and Tyler Linarez of Lincoln - missed out in attempts to qualify in the boys 400-meter.

More results to come later this evening.
