It's been up, down week for Lady Falcons soccer squad
The Colfax High girls soccer team found out Monday that nothing is going to come easy this season in Pioneer Valley League play. They then found out Tuesday what kind of soccer they can play if they stay focused. Three days after opening PVL play with a tough 1-0 win on the road at Placer, the Lady Falcons couldn’t sustain any momentum at all on Monday in a 2-1 upset loss in Citrus Heights at the hands of Mesa Verde. Then Tuesday, playing at home against perennial Div. I section power Davis, the Lady Falcons battled the visiting Blue Devils to a 0-0 standoff. In Friday’s game played under the lights at Placer, Colfax’s K.C. Capuchino found the back of the net with a volley off of a corner kick in the second half to help the visitors escape Auburn with a 1-0 win. The night match drew a good-sized crowd which braved cool temperatures to watch the two rivals go back and forth all night under the lights in the Pioneer Valley League opener for both squads. Colfax pressured Placer’s goal early in the second half before Capuchino took a corner kick from Chanel Filteau and put it through in a crowded penalty box for what proved to be the game winner. Placer tried to rally but Colfax goalie Amber Cramer came up with seven key saves in the match. Colfax coach Steve Robinson also praised the play of sweeper Courtney Evans. In Monday’s match at Mesa Verde, the Lady Falcons scored on a goal from Capuchino just 22 just 22 seconds into the contest but Colfax (6-3-2 overall, 1-1 PVL) fell flat for the rest of the game. The Mavericks broke a 1-1 halftime tie with the game-winning goal late in the second half. The Falcons blanked Mesa Verde 5-0 in the J.V. game. Colfax has a bye in PVL play until hosting Lincoln next Monday at 4 p.m.
